BAME groups up to twice as likely to die from Coronaviurs, government report reveals

People from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic groups (BAME) are up to 50% more likely to die from Coronaviurs than those from a white British background, according to a new report by Public Health England. 

The Public Health England review, which looked at the disparities in the risk and outcomes from Covid-19 for different cross-sections of society, found those of BAME ethnicity had between 10 and 50% higher risk of death from the virus.

Black males were 4.2 times more likely to die from a COVID-19-related death than White males, according to the Office of National Statistics.

Statistics featured in the delayed report 

Additionally it said that Pakistani, Indian and black African men are respectively 90%, 150% and 310% more likely to work in healthcare than white British men.

In the Commons, the Health Secretary Matt Hancock said those coming from a non-white background was a "major risk factor" in the virus. 

Protests have taken place across the world after video footage showed unarmed black man George Floyd die after a white officer held him down by pressing a knee into his neck last Monday.

Crowds gathered at Belfast City Hall on yesterday, hours before a demonstration took place outside the US Embassy in Dublin.
