Bart Simpson.

A Magherafelt woman’s explanation for not having a TV license is one of the top ten excuses of the past year in the UK.

‘It’s not a TV, it’s an LCD fire ‘ – that’s what one Magherafelt woman said when a TV licensing officer called.

But he wasn’t to be outdone when he spotted the flat screen TV showing The Simpsons. And he replied: ‘It’s got Bart Simpson-shaped flames.’

Around 94 per cent of homes are correctly licensed.

But a small minority continue to offer feeble excuses when they’re caught evading.

A license is needed if you’re watching or recording live TV, or watching or downloading BBC programmes on the iPlayer.
