There are calls for more to be done to raise awareness of the issue.
Northern Ireland women are being urged to be more aware of the signs and symptoms of heart disease as British Heart Foundation Northern Ireland (BHF NI) reveals five women die from heart and circulatory disease every day here.
The heart charity warned when women experience symptoms that could be attributed to heart disease they are more likely to ignore them or dismiss them as something else.
BHF NI said it is worrying that some women don’t realise that heart disease could happen to them when twice as many women here die from coronary heart disease as breast cancer.
The charity is urging women to be more aware of the signs of a heart attack and says far more research is needed to improve ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating heart disease in women.
Signs and symptoms women should look out for include pain, heaviness or tightness in chest, neck, jaw, arms or shoulders.
