Police are appealing for information following a report of a burglary at a property in the Altagarron Road area of Dungiven around 9.20am on Tuesday 10 April.

Detective Sergeant Miller said:

“Entry was gained to the property at 9am. All the rooms in the house were ransacked and some items of jewellery stolen.

"No-one was in the house at the time. It is suspected that more than one person was involved and that they probably travelled to and from the house on foot.

“We are appealing to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area early on Tuesday morning, to get in touch with police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 278 of 10/4/18."

Detective Miller continued:

“I can assure the local community that tackling burglaries in the Dungiven area is a major priority for us and residents can expect to see additional patrols in the area.

“It is really important that you report any type of activity that raises your suspicions. It’s a good way to alert us so we can investigate and it will also help deter criminals and reduce crime in your area.

“For example, if you see an unusual vehicle parked or travelling on a road in your area, or strangers calling at houses, take a note of the vehicle registration number and a description of any vehicles and pass that information on to police."

The PSNI has put together the following tips for keeping homes and possessions safe:

1. Close and lock all doors and windows even if you are only going out for a few minutes.

2. Leave a light on if it will be dark before you get home. Consider security lights. To a burglar, a dark house is an empty house.

3. Keep your valuables out of sight.

4. Cancel milk or other deliveries if you will be away from home.

5. Don’t leave car keys near your door, letterbox or windows.

6. Always check who is at the door. Not sure? Don’t open the door.

7. Set your alarm when going out. If you do not have an alarm, consider installing one.

8. Ask a neighbour or a friend to check your property and to remove post from the porch/hallway.

9. Inform police if your house is to be vacant for any length of time.

10. Always keep sheds and outbuildings locked and secure ladders.

“If you would like further advice on home security you can contact your local Crime Prevention Officer on 101.”
