A generous businessman has stepped in to help a family from Belfast who made a desperate plea for support after a boy was hit by a car on holiday.

16-year-old Jay Hamill lies in a Spanish hospital nine days after the accident.

He needs a neck brace, having sustained significant injuries in Salou.

The holiday insurance company refused to cover the £19,500 needed for an air ambulance to take him back to a Belfast hospital because Jay had been drinking an alco-pop when the incident happened.

But, in a social media post, his brother Ryan confirmed a businessman who wishes to remain anonymous has paid for the ambulance which will transport Jay home.

The message said: "Doctors are now working to secure him a bed in the Royal hospital."

Adding that, "We want to thank everyone who came together and donated money. All the money raised will be given to this kind man who helped our family out big time."

The family has also thanked local councillor, Paul McCusker for his efforts.
