An event highlighting the importance of eye care and diabetes will take place in Cookstown.

Diabetes UK Northern Ireland has partnered with the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

The half day event brings together experts at the Burnavon.

It's scheduled for Wednesday 19 October.

Diabetes UK Northern Ireland National Director, Dr David Chaney, says they're hoping to reach out to anyone who is concerned about visual impairment as a result of their diabetes.

The event is free of charge and lunch will be provided. The programme boasts speakers such as Professor Alan Stitt, Director of the newly formed Centre for Vision & Vascular Science (CVVS) at Queen’s University Belfast and the Head of Ophthalmic Services Directorate of Integrated Care, Raymond Curran.

"As with most of the complications associated with diabetes, we know that good management and support can make an important difference in delaying or preventing the complications altogether. For those already experiencing visual impairment we want to provide the support required so they can be as independent as possible," says Dr Chaney.

Also speaking at the event will be RNIB NI’s Community Services Manager, Caroline Temple.

She says it promises to be an extremely informative event.

If you would like more information about this event on 19 October at the Burnavon Theatre or any other diabetes-related issue then please contact the Diabetes UK Northern Ireland office on 028 9066 6646 or email n.ireland@diabetes.org.uk.
