Man accused of murder Fermanagh teenager denied bail

A 29-year old bare knuckle boxer was remanded into custody today (Thursday) accused of murdering Fermanagh teenager John Paul McDonagh.

The 18-year-old was found in the Coolcullen Meadow area of Enniskillen last Saturday (11th), and although rushed to hospital after sustaining serious wounds to his leg, died in hospital on Monday.

Joseph Joyce appeared at Strabane Magistrate's Court, sitting in Dungannon, via a video link with HMP Maghaberry.

After confirming his name, the accused - a father of four, also from Coolcullen Meadows in Enniskillen - was charged with murdering Mr McDonagh. He was also charged with wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and possessing a weapon in a public place.

When asked if he understood the nature of the charges, the accused replied "yes I understand them."

A detective constable then told the court he believed he could connect Joyce to the three charges he faced, including murdering Mr McDonagh.

The officer said bail was opposed on several grounds - including concerns over his safety due to threats to his life. Concerns were also expressed that Joyce would interfere with witnesses, and flee the jurisdiction.

Branding the fatal incident as a "tragic event", District Judge Eamonn King refused bail and remanded Joyce back into custody. He will appear in court again, via video link, on May 11.
