Police in Mid Ulster are warning the public to be alert and cautious when it comes to hitchhikers or someone asking for a lift, after a woman was robbed on Monday after stopping.

A spokesperson for the PSNI posted on facebook yesterday:

"Please be very careful if you consider to help a hitchhiker on a road.

"Yesterday an elderly lady came across a vehicle in the hedge, and she stopped to see if they were okay. Three males in the vehicle then asked for a lift in her car.

"Later the woman discovered that her purse had been stolen and that a sum of money was withdrawn from her bank account.

"If you see suspicious activity, do not hesitate to phone our non-emergency number 101."
