Following a burglary at a new housing development in the Dungannon area in which 2 wood burning stoves, 2 ovens, 2 hobs and 1 dishwasher have been stolen, Police are giving the following advice to builders of new builds.

  • Security fencing is the best form of perimeter protection. Use a suitable fence, allowing thieves to be visible from the outside and increasing the chances of unusual activity being noticed.

  • Gates should be of heavy construction with locking hardware consisting of a case hardened chain and a high security close-shackle padlock permanently attached to the fence or shielded/blind locking devices should be used. If possible, have only one entrance/exit.

  • Lighting – good portable lighting will help illuminate the site and deter intruders.

  • Houses nearing completion should have a monitored alarm system installed and the system set while awaiting occupation and before fittings and white goods are installed.

  • CCTV should also be considered to protect the area.

  • Display warning notices stating security precautions are in force.

  • Your own tools should be removed from the site routinely at the end of the day or stored in a securely locked and alarmed container – any tools/machinery left on site should be visibly marked and also covertly marked.

"Report any suspicious activity to police on 101 or if an emergency 999. Contact local Crime Prevention Officers for further specialist advice."
