The new UUP leader has dismissed calls for a single unionist party.
Robin Swann said such a move risked driving unionists into the Alliance Party or leaving them with nobody to vote for.
He also promised his Stormont team would not join the Executive if political agreements were made solely for the DUP and Sinn Fein's benefit.
At the party's AGM and Spring Conference, he replaced Mike Nesbitt.
Mike Nesbitt stood down from the post last month in the wake of a poor UUP Election.
The former broadcaster became leader in March 2012 after Tom Elliott stood down - although both remain elected representatives for the party.
He was the only candidate for the position when Mike Nesbitt resigned from the role last month after the party's disappointing performance in March's election.
