Crusaders went down fighting in front of 30,000 fans away to Wolves in the Europa League qualifiers on Thursday night.
They lost 2-0 with the English Premier League club's second goal scored in the dying seconds of injury time by Ruben Vinagre.
It followed a mistake by Crues keeper and captain Sean O'Neill who had earlier made a string of brilliant saves.
The visitors had held out until the 37th minute when Diogo Jota broke the deadlock.
The second round tie concludes next Thursday with the return leg at Seaview in Belfast.
Crues manager Stephen Baxter said it was the best performance he had seen in his 20-year association with the club.
