The amount of waste going into landfills has fallen to its lowest levels in ten years.
The news was revealed when DAERA Minister Michelle McIlveen responded to a question on the zero waste strategy.
Recycling's also increased substantially.
Council's are obligated to improve waste collection in line with new regulations by April next year.
Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan welcomes the progress.
He says, "It will significantly decrease the amount of waste that goes to landfill and will go towards assisting with reaching the targets."
