PNC Championship: Tiger and Charlie Woods narrowly miss out to Bernhard and Jason Langer despite hole-in-one

Charlie Woods hit a hole-in-one at the PNC Championship - but it wasn't enough as Team Woods narrowly missed out to Bernhard Langer and his son Jason in a play-off in Orlando on Sunday.

Bernhard holed an eagle putt on the first extra hole to successfully defend the title after the two teams had finished tied on 28 under par.

During the final round, Charlie made history at the 175-yard par-three fourth at the Ritz-Carlton club.

Charlie appeared unaware that his ball had gone in until a large gallery by the green began wildly cheering, as did another group of fans on the other side of the hole, most of them holding up their index finger - some downward to indicate it went in the hole, some upward to show his score.

Television cameras finally confirmed it for him. Tiger Woods gave a hard embrace to his son, then playfully shoved him away. "First one," Charlie said as cameras surrounded him.

"It was a perfect seven-iron, so just kind of hit it," Charlie said as he approached the fourth green. "Down off the left, a little cut seven. It was awesome. I didn't think it went in. I don't believe anybody until I go up there and see it."

Tiger then teased saying: "You're buying. That's the protocol for making a hole-in-one," but Charlie responded: "I'm broke."

Around 30 minutes later, Paddy Harrington - the son of three-time major winner Padraig Harrington - also made a hole-in-one on the eighth hole.

Despite their defeat, Tiger and Charlie both remained in high spirits with the 15-year-old saying: "It was awesome, it's the most fun I've ever had and on top of that I made an ace, I can't top that."

Tiger added: "I'm just super happy for Charlie, no one made a mistake today and we had to earn it. I'm nowhere near in competitive shape but we made a great team and that's the whole joy of it."

The PNC, which features 20 major champions each playing with a member of their family, is Tiger Woods' first competitive event since undergoing surgery on his back in September.

Tiger and Charlie have headlined the field but are yet to win the tournament. In 2021, the pair finished in second place behind John Daly and his son, John Daly II.

"That was unbelievable, what a perfect moment," said Sky Sports' Oliver Fisher.

"The perfect number, a seven iron, a little bit down off the left, loved it from the moment he struck it and his dad wasn't by him.

"What a moment to miss but it was an unbelievable scene for Charlie. It's a great start and a real nerve-settler for them.

"There's no feeling like when you strike a shot on the tee and it actually goes in the hole. You can see that Charlie found the whole thing surreal and it's just a wonderful moment.

"It was a huge day today, not only for Jason but for Bernhard too, going out with Tiger. It was neck and neck throughout the whole day and we saw some super shots from everyone."
