The Department of Health is unveiling the latest phase of its plans to transform care at GP surgeries across Northern Ireland today.
An event is taking place at the Donard Family Practice in Newcastle, the first surgery to be fully staffed in the region.
The Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs) Initiative is being expanded into two new areas and involves staffing GP practices with physiotherapists, mental health specialists and social workers.
The expansion brings the initiative to GP Federations covering Causeway and Newry & District.
In addition, West Belfast Federation will receive funding to fully roll out the model in its area.
The innovation was launched last year with GP Federations in Down and Derry, therefore with the latest additions, MDTs will be available in all five trust areas.
MDTs will see local GP practices focus not just on managing ill-health but also on the physical, mental and social wellbeing of communities.
Doctor Margaret O'Brien who heads up General Practice at the Social Care Board believes it is having a positive impact and says feedback has been good so far.
