A council-owned dump in Ballycastle was forced to close this morning following an incident overnight.

Fire crews were spotted at the site on the Moyarget Road this morning, while the entrance to the facility was blocked off by a council van.

Pictures from the scene show extensive damage has been caused to a digger and an office.

Police have now confirmed the incident is being treated as an arson attack.

A PSNI spokesperson said:

“It was reported to police at approximately 8.35 am that a telehandler vehicle was set on fire and destroyed, whilst an office at the site was also set on fire causing damage.

“It is believed that entry was gained to the site between 4.30 pm on Thursday, 17th of January and 8.00 am on Friday, 18th of January.

“I would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in and around this area or anyone who has information that could assist with police enquiries, to contact on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 187 18/01/19.”
