Votes were cast during a meeting of the party yesterday morning
The members of the Labour Party in Northern Ireland have voted overwhelmingly in favour of Jeremy Corbyn MP as the leader in the forthcoming election.
Votes were cast at a packed general meeting in the Wellington Park Hotel on Saturday morning.
121 of those eligible to vote backed Corbyn. 33 thought the Constituency Labour Party should remain neutral, and 14 voted in favour of Owen Smith MP.
Chair Anna McAleavy added, ‘although the overwhelming majority of members present voted in favour of supporting Jeremy, it is important to note that each of the over 3,000 members of the NI CLP party has an individual vote in the ballot, which of course they are free to cast as they wish. Yesterday’s meeting marked a milestone in the development of LPNI, and I am proud that the debate was conducted in such a collegiate atmosphere.'
