One man charged with attempted murder following "savage" stab attack in Co Down

A 35-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing at a house in Newry last night. 

Police say the 41-year-old victim - who has undergone surgery - suffered "life changing" injuries as a result of the "savage" attack on Talbot Street. 

The suspect will appear at Newry Magistrates Court on Monday. 

A 22-year-old man has been released unconditionally.    

Earlier police revealed that the sustaining "life changing" injuries in the "savage attack" which happened at around 10.30pm.

Sinn Féin councillor Valerie Harte there is "huge concern" and shock in the community. 

"This news has to shocked us all," she added. 

"Stabbing sand knife crime in general have become all to regular.

"Those engaged in these violent criminal acts need to be apprehended and face the full rigours of the law."

In a statement the PSNI said: "Detectives investigating the report of a stabbing in a house in Talbot Street, Newry on Friday, 24th January have charged a 35 year old man with attempted murder.

"He is due to appear at Newry Magistrates' Court on Monday, 27 January.

"As is normal procedure all charges will be reviewed by the PPS.

"A 22 year old man who had also been arrested has been released unconditionally."
