The Cornfield Project benefits from funding by Kew Gardens competiton
The seven acre 'Cornfield' site between Millburn and Ballysally has so often been used by drinkers and fly-tippers alike. Now, thanks to The Cornfield Project and a little help from Kew Gardens the area could end up as one of the most attractive sites in the town.
Kew Gardens provided $120,000 to aid in the transformation of the area, as The Cornfield Project was the regional winner of a competition run by Kew. That helped the project go about planting wildflowers, building outdoor classrooms and putting in a community gardens. The group have even organised the likes of 'bat walks', to help introduce people to the importance of nature, and what they can do to improve their local community.

Speaking to Q radio, Project Manager Catherine Armstrong said that the Cornfield Site won a public vote to become the 'Grow Wild' flagship site in Northern Ireland. "It's very much a community project" said Catherine "we're also trying to engage with under-25's" Working in conjunction with local schools such as the Millburn and Ballysally Primary. the project has even sent seeds in to space with astronaut Tim Peake, while older children made a rocket-shaped planter for the younger students to use.

"It's hugely important" added Catherine "it's bringing something very different to the community." As the flagship site of the 'Grow Wild' they want to champion what they are doing, with plans in place to inspire other regions to take a similar approach to nature."
The project isn't finished yet either. Catherine highlighted the huge interest in nature, along with a genuine desire amongst the community to improve their natural sites. "We are very much looking at this as a long term project" said Catherine "It's a constant development"
The official launch of the site which includes a mad Hatter's Tea Party and an appearance from local magician Rodd Hogg will take place this Saturday evening.
