Facilities across council participate in 'Autism Hour'

A number of cultural and leisure facilities across the district area took part in 'Autism Hour' today from 10am - 11am.

The National Autism Society initiative was suggested to the Council by its Dungannon branch. 

Its aim was to encourage organisations to take simple steps to make facilities more autism friendly such as reducing music and other noise and dimming lights. 

By taking these small steps it can make facilities less overwhelming for people with autism. 

Cultural facilities that took part included the Burnavon, Cookstown, Seamus Heaney HomePlace, Bellaghy, and Hill of The O'Neill and Ranfurly House, Dungannon. 

Leisure facilities that were participating were Dungannon Leisure Centre, Mid Ulster Sports Arena, Cookstown, Cookstown Leisure Centre, Greenvale Leisure Centre, Magherafelt and Meadowbank sports Arena, Magherafelt. 

While council facilities are already currently accessible to people with autism, by taking part in this initiative it will create an increased level of awareness and understanding of the condition. 

Speaking prior to Autism Hour, Chair of the Council, Councillor Kim Ashton commented: 

"Mid Ulster District Council is delighted to take part in the National Autistic Society's Autism Hour.

"For children and adults living with autism, and their families, accessing everyday services can present a real challenge. 

"Participating in this event gives us the opportunity to highlight and address these daily challenges."
