Martin McElkerney, 57, was taken to hospital after he was discovered critically injured at Milltown Cemetery in Belfast on Thursday.
Police said they were not looking for any other person in relation to his death.
He was released from prison in 1999 under the Good Friday Agreement, whilst serving a life sentence for the INLA bombing at Divis Flats.
