South-East Antrim UDA to blame for "terror" in Larne, PSNI says

The PSNI says South-East Antrim UDA is responsible for causing panic and terror on the streets of Larne last night.

Around 30 to 40 men with their faces covered attacked officers with bricks, fireworks and petrol bombs in the Antivill and Linn Road area of the town. Bins were also set alight while three clawhammers were seized.

Disturbances started around 10.45pm. 

It follows "pro-active activity" from the Paramilitary Crime Task Force last weekend.

Superintendent Darrin Jones issued an appeal.

“This was a reckless and totally unacceptable night of violence that posed serious danger to members of the public, police officers – and indeed those who were taking part in it," he said.

“I would urge the community in Larne to reject these people who last night caused such fear and distress to local residents, as well as wrecking and terrorising the area they live in. And I would also call on people of influence in the area to intervene.

“I need to stress that while officers are dealing with this kind of criminal behaviour they are unable to provide other vital policing services to the community in order to keep them safe.

"I want to reassure the people of Larne that we are taking what happened last night very seriously and are committed to bringing those responsible before the courts.  

It's also been reported that a police van was used to protect cars owned by the public.

Superintendent Jones added: "I would urge the community in Larne to reject these people who last night caused such fear and distress to local residents, as well as wrecking and terrorising the area they live in."

No arrests were made and the incident ended shortly before 1am.
