The Lilywhites drew 1-1 with Legia Warsaw to miss out on the group stages
Dundalk missed out on the chance of becoming the first Irish side to reach the Champions League group stages, after a 1-1 draw with Legia Warsaw wasn't enough to overturn their first-leg deficit.
Dundalk lost the first leg 2-0 in Dublin and despite a credible result in Poland, they now head into the Europa League group stages.
The County Louth side took the lead in the first half after Robbie Benson's deliciously hit, right-footed volley from the edge of the area. However Michael Kucharczyk equalised for the Poles in stoppage time.
Benson, who stepped into the side due to the suspension of captain Stephen O'Donnell gave the Lilywhites genuine hope of progressing with his second goal of the European campaign. With a second yellow being shown to defender Adam Hlousek, reducing Legia to 10 men, Dundalk were given genuine cause for optimism.
However as the Irish side poured forward, the gaps in their defence were exposed, with Kucharczyk's low, stoppage-time strike putting the final nail into Dundalk's Champions League dreams.
