Roads closed as Sion Mills is hit by severe flooding

A number of roads have been closed in Sion Mills in County Tyrone because of severe flooding.

Worst affected areas include Garden Terrace, Parkside Gardens and the Melmount Road.

A number of people have been moved from their homes and police say part of the main A5 road has been closed following heavy rain.

Meanwhile the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service says its also dealing with flooding in Lisnaskea in county Fermanagh.

A spokesman told Q Radio: "“NIFRS has received approximately 28 calls to flood related incidents since 1800hrs this evening (22 September). As a result we have mobilised resources to 21 incidents mainly in and around Sion Mills and the Lisnaskea area.

We continue to work with our partner agencies to maintain public safety and as a result of a number conference calls and on site meetings this evening, we have ensured a co-ordinated approach is being maintained in the affected areas.

A combination of local crews and specialist water rescue teams worked extremely hard in challenging conditions, to assist those immediately
impacted by the flooding.

SDLP councillor Cara Hunter said it was "the worst flooding" in Sion Mills in years.
