William Henning was woken by the sound of the breaking glass at Hillview Terrace on Dromore Street after five o'clock yesterday morning.
The device that landed in his room failed to ignite - another petrol bomb missed the window and burst into flames against the front wall of the property.
Local police have branded it "a sickening attack by a disgusting creature" that could have resulted in the murder of an innocent man.
39-year-old William has severe learning difficulties and lives alone with support from family and friends.
He's been left traumatised but realises he was not the intended target of the arsonists.

His dad, retired Banbridge butcher Evan Henning, told Q Radio about the moment he found out about the attack.
William's mother, Dorothy, says she holds no hatred towards those behind the bombing.
