Belfast Christmas Market Celebrates 20 Years with a Dickensian Twist
Belfast’s most beloved festive tradition is back, and this year it’s bigger, better, and brimming with Victorian charm! The Belfast Christmas Market opens its gates at 12 noon on Saturday, 16th November, transforming the grounds of Belfast City Hall into a magical winter wonderland until Friday, 22nd December.
From its humble beginnings in 2004, with just 28 stalls, to becoming Northern Ireland’s largest Christmas event, the Belfast Christmas Market has grown to host over 100 chalets, attracting more than 1 million visitors annually. It’s a cherished staple of the festive season, generating over £60 million for the local economy each year.
Allan Hartwell, Managing Director of Market Place, shared:
"We are incredibly proud to celebrate 20 years of festive joy in Belfast. This milestone is a testament to the city’s warm welcome and the market's impact on the local community. Over the years, we’ve supported young entrepreneurs, hosted free school tours, and raised funds for local charities. We can’t wait to welcome visitors to this year’s unforgettable celebration.”
This year, visitors will be transported to the Victorian era with a Dickensian-themed experience on the opening weekend (16th and 17th November) and again on the third weekend (30th November and 1st December). Expect to encounter costumed characters, festive entertainment, and traders dressed in vintage attire, all adding a magical touch to the market atmosphere.
The market promises something for everyone. With traders from up to 30 countries, you’ll find authentic international cuisine, from Dutch pancakes and German bratwurst to Italian chocolates. Shoppers can browse a stunning selection of handcrafted gifts and bespoke artisan products, perfect for ticking off Christmas lists.
For family fun, the traditional carousel and vintage Helter Skelter return, offering spectacular views and thrilling rides for all ages.
This year, the market shines a spotlight on young entrepreneurs, partnering with the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) to offer six budding businesses the chance to trade for free. Plus, the winner of the Jolly Big Business Boost, Haus of Hank, will showcase its stylish and functional pet accessories in a free chalet.
Q Radio will provide entertainment throughout the market, with weekly DJ sets from Breakfast Show presenter Connor Brennan (Thursdays) and Weekend Party presenter Gareth Woods (Saturdays) at their bespoke booth in the food court. Cushlá Rice will host the Big Christmas Busk Off, where talented buskers will perform at the Q Radio booth every Friday lunchtime until 20th December.
Continuing its tradition of giving, the market’s Santa’s Grotto will be donated to Kids Together Belfast, one of the Lord Mayor’s charities. This incredible organisation supports children with disabilities and their families, creating an inclusive, magical experience for all.
Lord Mayor Micky Murray said:
"The Belfast Christmas Market has become an integral part of our city’s festive season. It’s wonderful to see it continuing to grow and give back to the community through initiatives like Kids Together Belfast’s inclusive Santa’s Grotto. With the Christmas lights switch-on kicking things off on 16th November, it’s set to be a magical season in Belfast!”
